HOW WE STARTED

SGBC was founded in August 2019 by Vandita Morarka, Founder and CEO of One Future Collective, and was housed within the organisation until March 2025. Over five years, SGBC grew into a vibrant community of over 3,000 readers, hosting meet-ups across the world and creating a safe, supportive virtual space during the pandemic.

What began as a passion project evolved into a larger initiative, but its integration within an institutional framework brought challenges around resourcing, funding, and questions of long-term scalability.

In March 2025, we made the intentional decision to transition SGBC into a fully volunteer-led and community-driven initiative outside of One Future Collective. This move reflects our continued belief in the power and importance of such a space: one that remains accessible, free of cost, and grounded in the values of collective care and joy. We see this shift as an opportunity to grow an even larger, more inclusive reading community, while staying true to the spirit of why SGBC was created: to celebrate literature, build meaningful connections, and hold space for feminist reflection and dialogue.
